A Quick Recap of the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa Changes

There are two new ways to qualify for residence are coming to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, as well as changes to the existing points-based pathway.

1. Skilled work experience pathway

This is for people working in skilled roles (skill levels 1 to 3). To qualify, you'll need at least 5 years of work experience directly related to your role. Two of those years must be in New Zealand, earning at least 1.1 times the median wage.

2. Trades and technician pathway

This is for people working in certain trades or technician roles. To qualify, you'll need a relevant qualification at Level 4 or higher, plus at least 4 years of experience gained after finishing that qualification. Eighteen months of that experience must be in New Zealand, earning at or above the median wage.

3. Existing SMC 

There are also changes coming to the current 6-point SMC system. You'll be able to earn more points for New Zealand qualifications and some overseas qualifications, and the amount of skilled work experience you need will be reduced.
