Thinking about moving to New Zealand next year? Questions to ask before you decide

The summer holidays have a way of bringing big ideas to the surface. Long days, time with family, and a bit of space to think. If moving to New Zealand has been on your mind, now is a good time to look at it properly. Here are five questions we'd encourage you to sit with before you take the leap.

1. Which pathway would you realistically qualify for?

Wanting to move and making it a reality are two different things. Most people start on a work visa, often the Accredited Employer Work Visa, which means you'll need a job offer from an accredited employer first. If residence is the goal, it pays to know early whether your occupation, experience and pay could line up with a residence pathway later on. A clear plan from day one saves a lot of heartache down the track.

2. What do your partner and kids need?

A move is rarely about one person. Can your partner work here, and will their career translate? What visas will your children need for school? How will everyone settle in socially? The best decisions we see are the ones the whole family has talked through together, honestly.

3. Does the salary actually cover the cost of living?

New Zealand salaries can look good on paper until you factor in rent, groceries, power and petrol. Housing costs in particular vary a lot depending on where you live. Do the sums for the city or town you're actually considering, not the national average, and be realistic about the first year while you find your feet. We also encourage you to do plenty of research, and go into it minus the rose-tinted glasses. Unfortunately, New Zealand's cost of living is considered high, and bills and daily living expenses can quickly add up.

4. How will you feel being far from family?

New Zealand is a beautiful place, and it's also a long way from almost everywhere. Flights home are expensive and time-consuming. Missing birthdays, weddings and harder moments is part of the deal for many migrants. It's worth asking yourself how you'll stay connected, and what support network you'll build here.

5. Will your qualifications and registration be recognised?

If you work in a regulated field like healthcare, engineering, teaching or some trades, you may need to be registered in New Zealand before you can work. Some qualifications also need to be assessed. These processes can take time and money, so find out what applies to you before you resign from your current job.

None of these questions is meant to put you off. Plenty of families make the move and never look back. But the ones who thrive tend to be the ones who went in with their eyes open.
